Khaled AbuBakr is a well-known veteran and entrepreneur who spent his entire career in the Energy Industry. For the past 40 years, Abubakr has played a key role in helping to grow the sustainable role of the public and private sectors in the Egyptian gas and energy sectors in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa. In December 2022, the Italian President bestowed and granted Eng. Khaled Abubakr, the decoration of “Cavaliere delle’Ordine della Stella d,Italia” in recognition of his significant contribution and efforts in consolidating economic ties between Italy and Egypt, as well as his pivotal role in developing cooperation in the sectors of Oil & Gas and Renewable Energies.
After a successful 13 years in the state-owned sector (including EGPC, SUCO, ENPPI, and Egypt Gas), he moved for the last 27 years to the private sector while still helping in all ongoing energy developments. During these years, he expanded the footprint of EGYPT Gas, incorporated GASCO, and helped launch the CNG business.
In the past four decades, Eng. Abubakr co-founded and led several successful energy entities. In 1998, with his family and ENI’s ItalGas, they co-founded CITY GAS as well as House Gas, the first private gas distribution companies in Egypt, and became its CEO. In 2006, he co-founded TAQA Arabia, the leading private energy distribution company in Egypt, and is its Executive Chairman. Through its four divisions (Gas, Power, Petroleum & Water), and its 3400 professional employees in more than 50 cities, TAQA serves more than 1.5 million customers with 7 BCMY of gas, 1200 MW of contracted power capacities, 60 retail/fuel stations, as well as a state-of-the-art 65MW Solar Energy in Benban – “Aswan”, one of the largest renewable energy complexes on the planet.
He is also a co-founder and chairman of Master Gas, a leading company that operates, converts and fuels vehicles with clean Natural Gas, with more than 50 CNG Stations and car conversion centers. Master Gas pioneered the “CNG Mobile” Services (Virtual Pipelines) in Egypt, serving remote customers off the gas grid.
In July 2023, TAQA was listed in Egypt’s stock exchange. At launch day, it recorded the highest increase ever in the history of the EGX, reaching 500 times the offered value. This was a reflection of the great reputation and success the company has achieved as a National energy Champion.
In 2014, he co-founded and became President of Blue Ocean Energy, which concluded a $25 billion Gas Import-Export project in the East Mediterranean, moving around 11 billion cubic meters of gas annually in Egypt’s and the Mediterranean’s energy hub. The company’s turnover is around $2.5 billion per year.
In 2020, he co-founded and became Chairman of Rosetta, an integrated energy company focusing on accelerating the energy transition in emerging markets. Rosetta promotes the use of LNG as a sustainable fuel by developing and investing in LNG infrastructure in the Middle East and Africa.
In 2022, he founded GOGAS, a specialized upstream company focusing on developing, investing, and operating Oil & Gas production and reserves facilities, in the Middle East and Africa, including Ghaza Marine.
Eng. AbuBakr serves in many professional organizations and corporate boards, including Chairman of the Egyptian Gas Association, Board Member of the International Gas Union since 2012, and is appointed as its Regional Coordinator for Africa, as well as a member of its “Audit Committee”. He is also a Board member of Arabian Cement Co. and Maridive Co., listed in EGX, and Chair Audit & Governance Committee for both companies. He serves as President of the Italian Egyptian Business Council since 2012. He served four terms as Vice-President of the American Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of its Energy Committee for eight years. Previously, he served as a Board Member in “Industry Development Authorities,” IDA, and the Egypt Modernization Center – EMC. He served ten years on the International Advisory Board of the HEC – Montreal University. He serves as a Board member in several significant listed companies in EGX, such as Suez Cement, Olympic Group, and served in both “Audit Committee”.
Education:
Eng. Abubakr graduated from the Jesuit School, holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Cairo University and an MBA in Management of Oil and Gas companies from the HEC at Montreal University. He completed the “Reform and Privatization Program” at Harvard University and a Diploma in “International Oil and Gas Financial Management” from the University of Texas at Dallas.
